The naming of our organisation
Beyond Eight, is a name deeply reflective of our commitment to break the continuous and devastating effects of the cycle of poverty. We seek to emphasise the need to go “beyond” the seemingly infinite and insurmountable effects of poverty. The number 8, represents the infinity sign at a different angle, and marks the need to forever work towards a world where poverty will be no more. The name ‘Beyond Eight’ is also reflective of our core educational program, which gives students the opportunity to continue their education past the Australian equivalent of year eight.
Financial management
All financial accounts of Beyond Eight are prepared by a certified chartered accountant and are audited annually by certified auditors.
Administrative expenses for Kenya, Ghana & Australia
As mentioned above, at least 80 per cent of all funds from educational-partners go directly towards funding the education of partnered-students. In order to run the Program, Beyond Eight uses approximately 20 per cent of educational-partner funds for local transportation, communication, printing, office and administrative costs and wages required in Australia, Kenya and Ghana. To date, all Australian staff members are working on a volunteer basis and have personally funded all travelling and costs related to their volunteering. Thus, all wages are for staff in Ghana and Kenya.
Handling funds
Beyond Eight has a payment policy that minimises money handling by staff and volunteers. Our main payment mode is via direct transfer from an Australia banking institution directly to the bank account of the foreign institution. In circumstances where direct transfers are not feasible, Beyond Eight transfers funds to local partner organisations (with whom we have an agreement in place) that then forward payments to the relevant institutions.
Tax deductibility
Beyond Eight is a charitable institution under Australian law, and has the authority to conduct fundraising activities. Beyond Eight is not yet eligible to apply for deductible gift recipient ('DGR') status, since we are a recently established organisation. This means that your donations are not yet tax deductible. Upon being granted DGR status, you may be permitted to claim all past donations. We anticipate that Beyond Eight will be eligible and will apply for DGR status within the next 6 to 18 months. Sponsors will be informed if and when DGR status is obtained.
